Prediction of clathrate structure type and guest position by molecular mechanics.

The clathrate hydrates occur in various types in which the number, size, and shape of the various cages differ. Usually the clathrate type of a specific guest is predicted by the size and shape of the molecular guest. We have developed a methodology to determine the clathrate type employing molecular mechanics with the MMFF force field employing a strategy to calculate the energy of formation o...

Molecular recognition by novel cage-type azaparacyclophanes bearing chiral binding sites in aqueous media

Novel cage-type cyclophanes which are constructed with two rigid macrocyclic skeletons, tetraaza[6.1.6.1 Iparacyclophane and tetraaza[3.3.3.3]paracyclophane, and four chiral bridging components were prepared. An asymmetric character of the internal cavity was clarified by means of circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and a computer-aided molecular modeling study based on molecular mechanics and...

Trapping N2 and CO2 on the Sub-Nano Scale in the Confined Internal Spaces of Open-Cage C60 Derivatives: Isolation and Structural Characterization of the Host-Guest Complexes.

An open-cage C60 tetraketone with a large opening was able to encapsulate N2 and CO2 molecules after its exposure to high pressures of N2 and CO2 gas. A subsequent selective reduction of one of the four carbonyl groups on the rim of the opening induced a contraction of the opening (→2) and trapped the guest molecules inside 2. The thus-obtained host-guest complexes N2@2 and CO2@2 could be isola...

Encapsulation of Pt(iv) prodrugs within a Pt(ii) cage for drug delivery

This report presents a novel strategy that facilitates delivery of multiple, specific payloads of Pt(IV) prodrugs using a well-defined supramolecular system. This delivery system comprises a hexanuclear Pt(II) cage that can host four Pt(IV) prodrug guest molecules. Relying on host–guest interactions between adamantyl units tethered to the Pt(IV) molecules and the cage, four prodrugs could be en...

Thermodynamical and geometrical characterization of molecular recognition by cage-type and peptide azapara-cyclophanes in aqueous media

A cage-type cyclophane which is constructed with two rigid macrocyclic skeletons, tetraaza[6.1.6.1 Iparacyclophane and tetraaza[3.3.3.3]paracyclophane, and four chiral bridging components strongly binds anionic and hydrophobic guests, such as 8-anilinonaphthalene-I-sulfonate and 6-p-toluidinonaphthalene-2sulfonate. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated from temperaturedependent complexation c...
